MOONSHINE - a 100 word story

THIS WEEK'S 100 WORD STORY came to me while I was shopping, so I wrote it sitting in my car in the car park, which is very appropriate under the circumstances.
TO MY SURPRISE when I got home and typed it up, it came to exactly 100 words, so I decided to post the first draft - un-edited.
Thanks to Rochelle for the photo prompt on her blog;  https://rochellewisofffields.wordpress.com/

MOONSHINE
It started as a joke.
Frank, Hank and Billy-Joe were sprawled on the veranda of their mouldy cabin in the woods drinking moonshine.
“This stuff tastes like horse-piss,” Frank said and Hank said, “More like jet-fuel,” and Billy-Joe said, “Reckon it’d make even our old bangers fly.”
Frank ‘borrowed’ the company’s muck-shifter that weekend and built a ramp out in the desert, while Hank tinkered with engines and Billy-Joe spread the word and took bets.
The entire town turned out to watch as the cars sped up the ramp and flew, all too briefly, before nose-diving into the unforgiving sand.

    1. It was drinking it that made them stupid enough to do it!

  2. That pic is a bit like the automotive equivalent of the head-down-the-loo after effects of too much booze!

    3. By our age, dear Robert, if you haven't talked to God on the Big White Telephone a few times you've lived a very tame life!

  3. Must be one hell of a ramp.
    Good piece.

  4. Perfect capture of dumb guys. Grew up in an area filled with guys like this, back hills of moonshine stills. Pic is excellent.

  7. Stupid follows where stupid leads. Fun take on the prompt.. stumbled a bit on "bangers" and "muck-shifter" Not common terms here, though moonshine and stupid we have in abundance.

    1. /bangers are old cars that have suffered a few bangs in their time and on which the exhaust 'bangs' frequently. A muck-shifter is a machine that shifts muck!

  10. I skipped college classes to spend a day and spent a day with my Dad. We created our own college chemistry class by Jerry-rigging a moonshine still. The class took ALL DAY, ha. ... but what a day. That was the best class every taken.

  11. Dear Lizy,

I love it when a story comes quickly. I guess moonshine will only take a car so far. Fun story.

  13. Congratulations of the fast inspiration. I've had a few come that fast, but only after drinking moonshine, which by the way, can be very tasty or burn like liquid fire. It does bring on a daredevil demeanor, making one feel 12 feet tall and bullet-proof.

My only critique--I've never heard of a mouldy, backwoods cabin with a veranda. A front or back porch would be more common terminology for these characters.

    1. Thanks Russell - I'll remember your advice in furure. Not being a backwoodsman, or even American, I had to wing it and got it wrong!
ps - our own chilli vodka beats even poteen for sheer cross-eyed whoomph, but I;ve never tried moonshine.
