BREAKFAST - A STORY IN 100 WORDS

BREAKFAST

Their shoes crunching on frosty grass, the boys followed the trail of footprints.
“Bet they’re George’s,” said Harry, “He always gets there first.”
“Teacher’s pet,” sneered Paul, then stopped. “What’s that?”
“A tree stump, stupid.”
“It wasn’t there yesterday.”
They eyed the hunched shape warily.
“It could be a dead cow,” Paul suggested.
“Wrong colour,” said Harry, “Maybe a tramp?”
“Too big.”
“Kick it and see.”
“You can if you want – it freaks me out.”
They ran past, giving the hump a wide berth.

The ogre sighed philosophically.
There’d be others less timid and besides, he was still full of George.

This week's prompt had me squinting at the screen muttering, "What's that?" hence my story.
I must thank Rochelle for posting the photo and for hosting Friday Fictioneers where many other writers have interpreted it differently. Follow the Blue Frog trail on her blog.

  1. Like it! I come across lots of tree stumps that do this sort of thing!

  2. Very cute story. Never trust a tree stump. If it burps, it's full. If it doesn't, it may just be an old stump. Or it may be hungry!

  3. Oh what fun! Still full of George. Luckily the ogre is patient and the boys are scaredy cats. Brought a smile to my face- thanks, Alicia

    1. Sometimes laughter is a reaction to shock - we'll put you down as shocked rather than heartless, shallwe?

    1. Thanks you. I wasn't aiming for humour but it just came out that way. The best humour is unintentional.

  11. Poor old George! Knew something was coming along but didn't expect an ogre and especially not a philosophical one.

  14. I love philosophical ogres - they're the most interesting kind, especially ones with full stomachs. Very clever and entertaining.

  19. Ha, being first is not always a good thing. But I've always heard it's the 2nd person who gets snake bit when going through the forest.

    1. Not being a forest explorer I won't let that worry me, though the fact is now filed away for future reference.
