GOD
After the Apocalypse, scavengers roamed the city streets and
country ways, sniffing out every last body, and cockroaches feasted on
putrefaction.
Finally all machines – even computers – died from lack of
fuel, and the only sounds were the buzzing of insects, the cries of birds and animals,
and the rustle of plants reclaiming the land.
When the air was sweet again, the God of Rebirth unlocked
the underground chambers, and as the Chosen Few stood blinking in the sunlight
He spoke sternly.
“I am God. This is my world and your last chance to live peaceably.
Don’t screw it up.”

ha, ha! Serves us humans right. Lucky if we get a second chance...in real life. Wanna bet?
ReplyDeleteI hope God chose his Few carefully.
DeleteOh my, he is a vengeful God! I'm not sure I would have wanted to survive that apocalypse. And history usually repeats itself, given time.
ReplyDeleteHistory does - that's troubling and comforting all at once.
DeleteThank God for last chances.
ReplyDeleteI think Cheech said that to his partner, Chong, after smoking a doobie that they thought they had lost..
good tale...Randy
That would be a spliff in English, I guess?
DeleteI can identify with this, watching the news these past few weeks. I wouldn't be at all surprised... Well done.
ReplyDeleteThanks ~Sandra - I don't usually write political comment but I couldn't help it this time.
DeleteBet we'd be fighting again within a week.
ReplyDeleteSad but true, Patsy.
DeleteAnother corker, Liz!
ReplyDeleteI hope you're keeping all these to make into a book.
That was strangely unsettling. I was brought back with a bump by the last line.
Helen
Thanks, Helen. I have a file of them all - never throw anything away, me - does that remind you of anyone?
DeleteLove the last line. I guess the God of Rebirth has just about had enough of humans. I think we're on our last warning!
ReplyDeleteThanks Alistair - you'd think the gods in general would have nuked the lot of us by now, the way the world is behaving.
DeleteYes,, sounds likely.. but I would still think we would screw things up..
ReplyDeleteOnly one god is a good start, though they'll probably fight over how to worship!
DeleteThe History Channel had a show called 100 years after Man. It's amazing how fast nature reclaims it's territory once man is out of the picture. Thank God for second chances, but I don't have that much faith in man.
ReplyDeleteWhen we return to the UK there are a lot of good TV programmes I must catch up on. As for faith in man or God - we mustn't give up either or we're lost.
DeleteDear Liz,
ReplyDeleteNoah's Ark with an edge. I like God of Rebirth. Nicely done.
shalom,
Rochelle
I suppose it is the Flood story! I hadn't realised, but now you mention it . . .
DeleteWe did have similar angles :) Well written - I loved your take on it!
ReplyDeleteThank you - great minds?
DeleteSurvivor Apocalypse can be such a tough game to play. Nice take on the prompt.
ReplyDeleteWould you want to be one of the Chosen?
DeleteLove God's voice in this one, Liz! Lol
ReplyDeleteThanks seaview - God spoke His mind!
DeleteThis is an excellent 100 worder. The only down side is that we both know that they will screw it up again!
ReplyDeleteAh - but - maybe not! While there's life there's hope, so they say.
