EDRUN THE IMMORTAL - 100 word fiction

EDRUN  THE  IMMORTAL

Edrun’s subjects loved him. His courtiers walked backwards before him, servants fought over scraps from his plate, and his retiring-room slave had amassed a sizeable sum by selling the contents of the Royal commode.

When Edrun ordered a statue, saying he desired to be remembered, there was consternation.
“Sire! You will live forever!” they cried, but he felt the growth spreading.

Edrun died a year after the statue’s unveiling and within a month his son had it removed.
Now moss grows on the statue and only pigeons see this reminder of Edrun’s reign – and of his mortality.

  4. Dear Liz,

I suppose the pigeon poop is a fitting memorial of one who's reign was excremental. Clever story. Although I don't think I'd care to buy the contents of the commode, no matter how royal.

    Shalom,

    1. Not even if they had curative powers? That was in my mind but I couldn't fit it into the 100 words!

  5. Lizy, I think the program swallowed my 1st comment again. What I said was something like: Good and well-written story. The king probably had a grandson who saw what his father did and learned from it. The king's son will probably suffer the same fate. As they say, "What goes around comes around." : ) ---Susan

    1. Hi susan - again! I don't understand what happens to you comments or my replies to them. It is a mystery that I think will have to be solved from your end because noone else has reported this to me!
Thank you for persisting and for you kind words.

  7. That's the nature of royal lineage - no time to mourn, just moving on to the next in line. The same fate will be waiting for the son, who I fear will not be so beloved.

    2. Ah, it's a great device for shooting high-powered water at dirty things... or at lazy husbands.
NB, Please do not try the latter at home - that was most irresponsible of me!

    3. Ooh!! Where can I get one? Would it deter the yappy little rats on the balcony above us? My foam tube water pistol doesn't do the trick for long.

  14. Dear Lizy, Excellent story! People did sell every despicable piece of gross left overs and made good profit. Funny what people will stoop to sell for money. Me - too creepy to think of. Oh well, to each his own! Nan :)
