CARVED HEART
At preschool, Sam and Josie shared paint-pots and
finished each other’s pictures. They weathered the storms of senior school
together, and at fourteen pledged eternal love, carving SJ inside a heart on a
tree.
Then Josie went to university, promising, “I’ll be
back.”
“But you’ll be different,” said Sam, sadly.
Josie became Josephine, MD of a successful company,
her photo in the papers, while Sam built houses with his Dad.
Eventually Josie returned. “I should have stayed – we belong
together.”
Sam showed her their carved heart, the initials divided
by time. “Not any more, Josie – we’ve grown apart.”
Oh, Lizy. That's beautifully sad. Well done, Sam!
ReplyDeleteThanks Helen - Josie will regret this for the rest of her life, I fear.
ReplyDeleteSuch a familiar story to me. Even the builder part!
ReplyDeleteBut luckily without any regret about who I finally ended up with.
Did I hit a nerve? Glad you made the right choice, and thanks Helen X
DeleteI was expecting a happy reunion at the end. Surprised by the downbeat ending. Well done Liz.
ReplyDeleteNot so much downbeat as realistic. Thanks Iain.
Deletebeing apart doesn't guarantee that love will last. there's always something coming in the way for better or worse.
ReplyDeleteNo guarantees, that's for sure.
DeleteWe are the people our journeys have made us. He's right
ReplyDeleteHe is, I hope he marries a local girl and has babies!
DeleteAw, not a Hallmark Movie ending! But sometimes, you just can't bridge the gap.
ReplyDeleteThey wouldn't have been happy.
DeleteYes, this happens. Very believable story, Liz. Good writing!

Thanks, Susan. They'll have lovely memories of childhood, though.
DeleteSad for Josephine but Sam's right - people do grow apart over time.
ReplyDeleteThink of all those best friends we've loved and lost, and the lovers!
DeleteSadness well told. I like to think what grows apart can be replanted and grow back together.
ReplyDeleteMaybe, or perhaps they need to continue separately.
DeleteDear Liz,
ReplyDeleteI was hoping for a happy ending. But not every story ends in one, does it? Well done.
Shalom,
Rochelle
Thanks Rochelle, and welcome back home!
DeleteAahhhh ... goals took precedence then reality kicked in only it was too late.
ReplyDeleteI liked it. A love story without the happily ever after.
Have a wonderful week … Be Safe
