MAN IN BLACK
The man in black’s sudden appearance at
the meeting caused a ripple of consternation, but his demeanour made the
Chairman of the Local Amenities Committee reluctant to evict him.
Within moments the proposal for a new
bowls pavilion was rejected in favour of lighting the long path which ran
diagonally across the park. Councillor Jarvis, the lone objector, was overtaken
by a coughing fit, and the vote was carried unanimously.
The tall globular lamps became known
in the local pubs as ‘that useless load of balls’, but all laughter ceased when
aliens landed a spaceship on the brightly-lit runway.

This dramatic image is the cover of my book A Volcanic Race, which is now available on Amazon in most countries, in print or ebook.
Written with a teenage main character, it is suitable for all age groups from early teens to pensioners, and would make a splendid stocking filler.
No stocking is complete without a book!

Thanks to Sandra Crook for the photo of a lamp which inspired me and other Friday Fictioneers this week, and to Rochelle for hosting the group on https://rochellewisoff.com/
Brilliant! They're closer than we think…
ReplyDeleteDuh duh duuhhh!
DeleteNow that's what I call a surprise ending! Nicely done. :)

Travel, Fiction and Photos
thanks Susan.
DeleteThey infiltrated us already! Great take Liz.
ReplyDeleteI thought everyone knew that, Iain!
DeleteI enjoyed how you did this.
ReplyDeleteThanks Dawn.
DeleteDear Liz,
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like their coming is imminent. Well done.
Shalom,
Rochelle
Any minute now!
DeleteNot the ending I expected - nor did they I guess!
ReplyDeleteClick to read my FriFic!
They certainly didn't.
DeleteGetting the local authority to light the runway sounds a lot like Mexicans paying for a wall...
ReplyDeleteIn a way, except the wall is to keep them out.
DeleteGood prophetic story, Liz.
ReplyDeleteProphetic? I hope not!
DeleteOoh, nice! What a clever plan :-)
ReplyDeleteNever spend your own money if you can avoid it!
DeleteThe landing of the aliens sure makes that coughing fit look suspicious. Zapped by a beam from space right at the right moment?
ReplyDeleteCould be.
DeleteMind control was always one of their most potent weapons :-)
ReplyDeletePossibly it still is - why else would two nations be letting their leaders get away with the madness of Trump and Kim?
DeleteGreat set-up, nicely constructed plot.
ReplyDeleteThaks Linda.
DeleteI loved this take on the prompt. Nicely done and congratulations on the publication of A Volcanic Race!
ReplyDeleteThanks Clare - on both counts.
DeleteHa.. there was a grander scheme after all... :-)
ReplyDeleteMuch grander!
DeleteEnjoyable story, Liz. It seems the Man in Black was on a mission that was made clear when the aliens landed. Good writing, Liz. All the best with your book. :) --- Suzanne
