JUBILADO & JARDINES - A-Z goes Spanish!

J is one of the few letters you have to pronounce differently in Spanish. The sound is rather like clearing your throat prior to spitting - in other words hawking, as in 'hawk and spit'.

JUBILADO is a lovely Spanish word for pensioner - it seems to derive from the word JUBILANT which is how one feels on retirement.

These two old men spend many a happy hour sitting beneath a JACARANDA TREE watching the traffic.

For more spectacular trees you should visit the JARDINES BOTANICOS on the outskirts of Puerto de la Cruz in the north of Tenerife. This JEWEL of a tropical garden is packed with mature trees and plants, and offers a cool oasis at the height of a Canarian summer.

  1. Those trees are incredible, I might try and use jubilado in a conversation later - I'm meeting some friends who qualify!

    1. I could have stayed in that garden all day, and it only cost a couple of euros to enter. Unfortunately it's a long drive from here.

  3. Those trees have such interesting shapes. That last picture reminds me of Rapunzel.

    1. I think that effect is because the branches send out secondary roots to maximise the food source. The roots are big enough to hide between.

  4. Botanical gardens are amazing places! We have one near where I live, and they have an area devoted to hundreds of species of orchid. :) Beautiful photos!

    1. You are lucky to be able to go there often, Li. I was given my first ever orchid for my birthday recently - a deep maroon one - and it is beautiful.

  8. I hope I'm jubilant when I get to that age. Very dramatic trees. Are those roots dangling from the branches?

    1. I think they are - when they reach the ground they burrow in and then thicken up to become motre trunk-loke.
