A CARD IN THE
WINDOW
“A lovely morning, madam.”
“Not according to those clouds – give me a chicken breast, please.”
“This one’s big
enough for two people.”
“But I live alone.”
“Then you should contact this lady who’s seeking a friend.”
“I don’t answer strangers’ advertisements in shop windows.”
“Strangers are only friends you haven’t met.”
“I will think about it, Mr Clark, but I must get home before
it rains.”
………………………………………
“Madam! Where have you been all week?”
“I caught a cold in that rainstorm on Tuesday – why do you ask?”
“A lady who answered that advert was murdered – I thought it
was you.”

This story is adapted from one I wrote last year for a writers' forum - even stories can be recycled! I almost didn't post an entry this week - my mood was too accurately depicted by the grey clouds of the photo prompt after we lost our lovely cat Kika. Her tribute follows this blog if you care to read it.

But what of the poor murdered lady? Such a tease!
ReplyDeleteMaybe this is the start of a novel?
DeleteGreat story, although I must admit I got a little turned around about who is who. Maybe it's just too late in the day.
ReplyDeletethanks for commenting, Alicia - it was a straight bac-and-forth dialogue so perhaps, as you say, it was too late in the day! :)
DeleteI must admit I got a little mixed up about who was who. Still a wonderful story about A Card in the Window. Alicia
ReplyDeleteGood line - strangers are friends we haven't met! I like the dialogue.
ReplyDeleteLily
Thanks, Lily - though not all strangers are potential friends!
Deleteyour character was very wise not to answer the stranger's ad. solid story!

DeleteShe was wise - if she's lonely she should join a club or something!
DeleteChickens can save you from certain death?
ReplyDeleteIs that why when you're sick, chicken soup is so good?
Sorry for the dead advertisement responder woman, but hurray for our protagonist, the proverbial grumpy single lady who doesn't answer cards in the window.
Randy
Thanks for commenting, Randy - three times! I shall see if I can add that "your comment is awaiting moderation" - thanks too for the heads up.
DeleteNot sure if my first comment went through. I don't see it on the page. But I enjoyed your chicken story. BTW, it always helps to give your characters name,. you gave the butcher a name - your protagonist should have one, too. not only does it make it easier for the reader to know who's speaking at times, but it gives an identity to the character. Just a suggestion. Randy
ReplyDeleteLizy, I hope my comment goes through. I've also been having trouble with this program. Good thing that lady is choosy who she makes friends with. The grocer must have thought he was seeing a ghost. Well written. : ) ---Susan
ReplyDeleteThanks Susan - it took me three tries to delete a comment that my previous visitor had duplicated! Some gremlins are about this week!
DeleteHi Susan - your comment got through but my first answer to you didn't! Let's hope this one does. And thanks!
DeleteDear Lizy,
ReplyDeleteLooks like she was wise not to answer the ad. Could have had murderous results.
So sorry about your cat. I know how you feel. Our pets are part of the family. I still feel the loss of some of them even though it's been years. Sending a hug your direction.
Shalom,
Rochelle
Thanks Rochelle - for the comment and the hug. My daughter-in-law is coming out on holiday in September and she's devastated that Kika won't be here.
DeleteDear Lizy, First, I'm so sorry about your cat Kika. What a cute name for a cat and I'm sure she will be missed. I have lost many dogs over the years, and the last two were my favorite and friends too. Your story is great, this week! It gave me shivers to think that Madam could have been the one answering the message. Good intrigue! You are so good at this Lizzy! Hope you have a better month. Nan :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Nan. If I remember correctly I chose Kika#s name because it means Princess in Japanese. At leat, I think so - I could be remembering wrong!
