NUTS! a story in one hundred words.

NUTS!
Moira crept round the shops, hiding her bruises behind her hair. Derek had ordered macadamia nut ice-cream – where on earth did he imagine she’d find that?
After an increasingly frantic search she tracked some down in the deli, and finished her shopping. At home she added a few more nuts and made a curry – he liked it hot enough to sear his taste-buds.

When Derek collapsed, gasping for his Epipen, Moira slipped along the back lane to throw the tub in a skip before calling an ambulance.
It arrived far too late, of course, but that was hardly her fault.

It's taken me 24 hours to think of a story for this domestic image taken by Na'ama Yehuda, so I hope you think it's up to scratch! If you would like to read how other writers interpreted it, follow the Frog link from Rochelle's blog https://rochellewisoff.com/

  1. I guess Derek had it coming to him.

  2. I can't feel much sympathy for a man who beats his wife. Whatever in his own background drives the behaviour, he could identify it as wrong and seek treatment. Strong sentiment in your story, Liz.

    1. I believe it's a powder thing, but there's no excuse.

  3. But why would Derek order a nutty ice-cream if he had an allergy? Maybe it was a strange sort of suicide!

  9. Ha, love the last line. None of it was her fault at all, just a tragic accident :-)

  12. A clever woman, though shouldn't be cheering for her. It's extremely difficult to feel sorry for an abuser. Cleverly written!! :-)

  14. Stories that involve abusing one's wife always push my therapist button. I'm glad she finally found a way to rid herself of the brute. Hope she lives happily ever after.

  15. Although I feel he deserved it, perhaps it might have been better if she'd acted sooner and in a less drastic way. (Although having never been in such a situation, I admit that I've no idea how hard it is to take any action, nor how I might behave.)

    1. My gut reaction is that I wouldn't put up with abuse, but I am fortunate never to have been in that position.
