HARRIET'S GIRLS - a 100 word story

HARRIET’S GIRLS

Harriet parked the four-by-four and opened the back for the girls to jump down.
As she heaved open the rusty gate with her muscular shoulders she wondered why he had bought such a dilapidated property, but business was business, so she shouted, “Hello!”
A man appeared and eyed the girls. “They’re smaller than I expected.”
Harriet bristled. “They’re big enough. You’ve paid for a week – don’t damage them.” She stroked their heads briefly. “You know what to do – be good for Mummy.”
Ignoring their plaintive cries, she drove away – one had to be hard-hearted to earn a living from goats.

  1. I enjoyed that unexpected ending, Lizy - but it still begs the question... just what was she renting them out for??

  2. Love it - love goats as well!
PS Got any advice on how to keep up the flow of writing whilst busy with other stuff? :)

    1. Weekly prompts help, as does telling yourself you have to write. Pretend you're your own tutor and give yourself a bollocking if you don't turn the work in!

  3. Great story but why would she rent out goats for a week? Clean up a yard? LOL

    1. Exactly that - have you seen the height of that grass?

  4. I seriously hope he only wanted these poor little goats as lawn mowers to clean up the property. The way you wrote this is quite suggestive (Yes, hand me the soap, please).

    1. I wrote it that way deliberately - did it fool you?

  5. Brilliant twist. I knew you wouldn't steer me down dangerous territory, but you lingered for a moment. Lovely recovery :-)

  6. Dear Liz,

I had the same question about why he would rent goats for a week and then read through your comments. At least it's not human trafficking. But my mind did go where soap is necessary. Well done.

  7. LOL. I got donkeys to eat clear my ground. Poor little kids but at least it wasn't the kids I started off expecting. Good piece.

    1. Goats love eating, so why not use them to clear rough gardens?
