SEARCHING - A 100 word story

This post is being done in a mad rush on Friday morning - I have to be at the airport in half an hour to catch a flight to England, where my daughter has just given birth to a beautiful baby girl after eleven years of trying. Here she is at an hour old.

Thanks to http://rochellewisofffields.wordpress.com/  for the photo that prompted the story, which I also wrote in a mad rush over my morning cuppa!

SEARCHING

Frank  searched for years.
Every vacation he covered hundreds of miles - along freeways, up and down innumerable side roads, stopping in each town and city, enquiring at every gas station, always with the same question.
“Have you seen this girl?”

Marjorie took their remaining children and left, so Frank quit his job to join a trucking company.
He asked other drivers, questioned every cafe owner, showed her photograph everywhere.
“Do you know her?”

He was despairing until he saw the road-sign with the faded cards stuck on it.
Her name and a town.
“Dad. Forgive me. Here I am.”

  1. Dear Liz,

For being in a mad rush, you wrote quite a story. I hope he reunites with his daughter. I think she has a lot of explaining to do. Hopefully this will bring some reconciliation and closure to the entire family. Well done.

And, I might add, beautiful granddaughter. Enjoy your time with her, Grandma. A hearty congratulations.

    Shalom,

    Rochelle

    1. Thank you Rochelle. I have yet to work out how to post on my blog with my tablet, so it was now or never! And I know every child is beautiful to their family but Millie is a little stunner.

  14. What a great way to become a grandmother.. and your story was fascinating.. it took a while to see if it was evil or benign.. But a father was last on my list of guesses.

  15. Congratulations on the new arrival - may you all enjoy your times together over the next many years.

As for your story, it was lovely to see the father's dedication pay off, and totally realistic - I could see his point of view but also his wife's and her needing to move on for the sake of the other children. I can't imagine being placed in that dilemma. If you rushed it, it showed only in the last fw lines, which left me with a series of questions, but I doubt you could have answered them given hours of editing, in light of the word limit, and questions can be the sign of a good story, so please dn't consider this a criticism, only a critique.

    1. Thank you for taking the time to write a critique, elmo. What questions were in your mind? Perhaps I could develop them into a longer story!

  16. Congrats, Grandma. She's very beautiful. I also enjoyed the story, especially the happy ending. It would be nice if all missing children stories ended like that.

    1. Thanks Russell. I agree it would be nice if all missing children were found safe, though Frank paid a heavy price for his daughter.
