CUTTING THE LAWN - a 100 word story

Back in Tenerife after a lovely two weeks in England with family, especially the new arrival Millie. She was a teeny 4lb 13ozs - that's just over 2kilos - but three weeks later she has already gained weight. She is the prettiest baby you ever saw and a delight to us all. Now all we need is for Millie's cousin to be born in Canada, which should happen this week, and we can relax for a while!

I have written absolutely nothing for three weeks, so the Friday Fictioneers' weekly challenge hosted by  https://rochellewisofffields.wordpress.com/  is a great way to dip my toe back in the water.

CUTTING THE LAWN

“Get your idle bum off that sofa and cut the grass!”

Terry glared, but he plugged the lawn-mower into the old kitchen socket and soon the sound of the machine filled the afternoon.

Sandra was making tea when the power blew.
Terry stormed into the kitchen and flipped the trip-switch back on. “Where’s the toolbox? I ran over the cable.”
“Unplug the mower before you fix it.”
“I know what I’m doing, woman.”

Sandra stood motionless, holding the teapot and breathing slowly to calm herself.

When she heard the scream she waited several long seconds before she pulled out the plug.

    1. There is a grain of truth in this story, Helen!

  2. I'm guessing the fact you live in a different country contributes to the fact that you'll be relaxing after the babies have both arrived.

    1. You could be right, Patsy, though I'd much rather be round the corner from both of them!

  3. I'm pretty sure Karma demands that the words "I know what I'm doing, woman" be rewarded with some horrible fate. Just as well she was there to keep him from electrocution...eventually. :)

  4. Congratulations on the new addition to your family. I can understand Sandra's distress and her delay. Men can be so non-safety conscious and we women do all the worry. Usually for nothing but when it does happen...... Nice flash for re-entry to the blogging world.

    1. Thanks Irene - non-safety conscious is a polite way of putting it! There are several stronger phrases one could use :)

  5. Ooh, that Sandra! Maybe Terry will be a bit more civil in future (if he has a future, that is!). Great story and welcome back :-)

    1. What's more likely is that Terry won't even remember he was so pompous!

    1. Thanks Bjorn - it's good to be able to participate again. I couldn't download the photo prompt on my tablet.

  7. Oh no! That's evil. Well written but has your 'other half' read it?

  9. Not quite sure if Terry is still with us, but either way it's a fun story. Seems a lot of pieces have punished spouses with electricity this week. Wonder why?

    1. I can't imagine, Perry, but watch your back - you are only one letter away from my victim!

  10. Sandra's reached her limit, obviously. Nicely finished - did she or didn't she? It's good to be left wondering.

  11. I'm nothing at all like Terry. In fact, I never know what I'm doing. No wonder I get injured at least twice a week. This one made me smile, Liz.

  12. Dear Lizzy, This is priceless and I like the way she thinks. There is absolutely nothing worse than for Mike to call me "woman." He knows there is always a pay-back coming if he slips up. I love her hesitation before the unplug - BRILLIANT! Nan :)

    1. Thanks Nan. When this happened to me 40 years ago I didn't hesitate first - a decision I often regretted!

  14. Welcome back, LIz. I've been watching that pretty baby on Facebook. ;)

All I could think of was how long a cord that lawnmower must have had. Poor Terry, maybe if he'd taken better care of the yard, he wouldn't have come to such a shocking end.

    Good one.

    Shalom,

    Rochelle
