B4911 - a 100-word story

B4911
They marched past the citizens in proud ranks, their armour polished to a shine even the General couldn’t fault. The only sounds were thousands of feet hitting the ground and the rustle of the watching crowd. Glancing left, B4911 saw his brothers and sisters waving and stood taller.

The General called a halt at the upper level and spoke.  “Troops! On this momentous day you have nothing to fear. The ancient records say that we are the only species able to survive a nuclear blast.”

B4911 swallowed nervously and stepped outside. Whoever wrote the records hadn’t known about arachnid mutation.

I very nearly wimped out of this week's 100-word challenge when I saw the photo prompt, but then this story popped into my mind. I hope you like it - do please leave a comment, even if it's only "Ugh!"
Thanks (I think!) to http://rochellewisofffields.wordpress.com/ for the disgusting photo. Follow the blue frog link on her blog to see what other writers made of it.

  1. I would have been floored by that photo too - you did a good job. I almost feel sorry for B4911.

  2. Dear Liz,

Ugh! And you're welcome. But you must thank Doug, the photographer as well.

I always figured that roaches would be the ones to survive a nuclear holocaust. Nothing seems to kill them,

    Nicely done.

    Shalom,

    Rochelle

    1. Actually, as I have lived in a tropical climate for 15 years, I have learned that a well-aimed shoe kills them best!

  3. A very creative story from a difficult photo. I thought it was a flee, so my story would have taken a different slant. I loved it.

    1. Thanks Maggie MAy. I see too many cockroaches out here to mistake it for a flea!

    1. Starship Troopers? You've lost me there, Bjorn, :(

  7. What a contest that would be: indestructible cockroaches vs mutant arachnids. So - no peace for the planet even after the people have been wiped out? Sad. Good story - imaginative take on the lovely photo.

  11. Thanks Carol - I suppose eeek! is marginally less drastic than ugh! Happy Christmas to you too.

  12. Liz, Good and well-written story. I think Bjorn was referring to the movie where Starship Troopers (human soldiers of the future) encounter giant alien bugs they have to fight. Like Rochelle, I've read that cockroaches probably have the best chance of surviving a nuclear war. Happy Holidays to you and your family. :) --- Suzanne
