The car skidded to a halt mere inches from the garage and
they negotiated the icy path to their front door. When Tony pushed it open a
lump of snow dropped down the back of Georgina’s collar. Then they discovered the electricity had failed again.
“Good thing I charged the laptop at work,” said Georgina,
sliding in a cd while Tony lit candles and phoned for a curry.
“I loathe this weather,” he said, “Let’s go abroad.”
“I’ll book somewhere online,” Georgina replied instantly, then she looked
at the screen and laughed aloud. “I don’t suppose you fancy going skiing?”
Suits that image perfectly - but Georgina sounds a tad smug to me.
ReplyDeleteSmug? Only if she chose the screen saver deliberately, surely?
DeleteSod's Law that's what would come up in a search. Icy!
ReplyDeleteSod's Law indeed - that's the kind of thing that would happen to me, mike.
DeleteI think they will continue to surf until they find someplace warm.
ReplyDeleteI know I would!
DeleteGive me warm weather and a hot tub ...
ReplyDeleteWarm weather we have here - but our need in summer is for a cool pool!
DeletePower cuts during cold weather are horrible. Although snuggling down in a duvet in the candlelight is pretty nice.
ReplyDelete... and also accounts for a lot of babies!
DeleteYes, I was conceived in February.
DeleteNice gentle story. I assume she will be shoving him into a crevasse or something.
ReplyDeletePatrick - you have a vicious streak!
DeleteGeorgina sounds like a fun and resourceful lady.
ReplyDeleteShe has a wicked sense of hunour, at least!
DeleteLizy, Good and humorous story. It's especially helpful when the electricity goes off in in winter weather and the pipes freeze. Well done. :) ---Susan
ReplyDeleteThanks Susan - I'd forgotten about freezing pipes!
DeleteDear Liz,
ReplyDeleteI hope she was kidding about skiing. Sounds like they could go do that in their back yard. Although I'm wondering how she can access the internet in a power outage. On the other hand I can with my iPhone. Guess I answered my own question.
In reading some of the comments above...hmmm a lot of September babies after cold winters.
Nicely done.
shalom,
Rochelle
Dear Rochelle - you might be right to question her internet access - my grasp of such basics is minimal!
DeleteI think you can pay for a 3G or 4G dongle that hooks you up to the net without a modem or router.
DeleteThanks for the info, MJ - I may follow up on that :)
DeleteI have some friends who go to Jamaica every year in the middle of winter. One week they missed an ice storm and ten-day power outage that happened while they were gone. I'm envious.
ReplyDeleteI pressed the wrong button - my reply to this is below! And I think it's lovely that you remember when you were conceived :)
DeleteTen days! That is horrendous. there are people who spend all winter in Tenerife - we call them 'Swallows' because they fly south for the winter.
ReplyDeleteI like Georgina's sense of humor. I hope it's her sense of humor. Otherwise I'd brain her! Cute story.
ReplyDeleteThanks Perry - she was only joking, honest!
DeleteFun girl Georgina, how long before Tony drops a snowball down her back? Nicely done.
ReplyDeleteOr maybe persuades her to go to the Caribbean!
DeleteBut skiing is a lot of fun.. at least the resorts usually have power...
ReplyDeleteand central heating and food and apres-ski, but tony wants heat!
DeleteDear Liz, good story and I don't blame her, I'd want to go somewhere warm! This happened to us years ago, someone wanted to go skiing to Colorado and we lived in Wisconsin, so I said "Yea, fun in the snow - sound's great!" But, we did have fun, that's the first time I learned how to really ski - and that's 'cause I got put in the 'remedial' skiing class in the afternoon. Sven was a great ski coach - fun! Thanks for the memory back! Nan :)
ReplyDeleteHi Nan - I've never been skiing, though my first husband did before we met, and when it snowed in our village in UK he got his old skis from the loft and the kids slid down our hill on them. Another good memory :)
