It is Albie’s fascination with the helter-skelter on the pier that first brings him to the attention of George, the owner. The ride influences the whole of Albie’s young life, and even in the midst of war the memory comforts him.
HORSES This is another thread that runs through the entire book. Gypsies
have always been horse-traders, and Albie’s affinity with horses strengthens
his belief that he might have gypsy blood.
And for your little taste of Tenerife, here is a photo of the HOOPOE that I sometimes see on my walks. Don't you just love his fancy HEAD-DRESS?
Not see a Helter skelter like that in years let along go on one. I'd have classed the Pikies more as Hore theves that dealers
ReplyDeleteBill! Wash you mouth out with soap! Not all travellers are thieves, any more than all house-dwellers are honest. And there's a helter-skelter just like that on Brighton Pier today.
ReplyDeleteLove these photos.
ReplyDeleteGood luck with the challenge.

We had a funfair here over the weekend - we had a helter-skelter of sorts but not as traditional as the one in your picture.

It's the first time I have even heard the word Helter Skelter. Your story is so appealing
ReplyDeleteYou didn't disappoint for H :-)
ReplyDeleteGypsy horse culture is interesting, and their wagons can be really beautiful, too.
Jenny's comment & Liz's response sum up a good 'H'. We saw Helter Skelters when on holiday as kids.
ReplyDeleteI've never hear of (or seen) a hoopoe. Great picture!
ReplyDeleteHave never seen that bird before- he's gorgeous! We had spiral fire escapes at college (way back in the day) and we used to open them up, climb up in the pitch black dark and slide down. It was forbidden. Which is one reason we did it. The other reason might have had something to do with alcohol. LOL
ReplyDeleteWhat a horse!
ReplyDeleteThe Beatles 1st introduced us (in the US) to Helter Skelter the amusement ride unfortunately Charles Manson gave it a new meaning.

I like your choice for H
ReplyDeleteI have a vague memory of being too scared to go down a helter skelter when I was small and having to be carried back down the steps. Actually, there's a bit of a theme emerging here. I also have a memory of being too scared to get onto a horse's back because he was too big. What a wimp I am!

I don't think I've ever been down one either. I too am a wimp!
ReplyDeleteLizy...will you hire one for your book launch? Please? Imagine the press coverage - you have to do it!
Helen - what a fabulous idea! Maybe I could have the book launch on Brighton Pier?
